Becoming a member
Church of the Annunciation welcomes all persons who choose to worship with us. We strive to ensure that all who enter here feel the sacred presence of Christ. You are invited to participate fully in the life of this community, particularly in worship, Christian formation, and in opportunities to serve others. You can become a member by notifying us that you intend to participate regularly in worship and to share your spiritual gifts and financial resources with the parish. There are visitor cards in the pews on which you can indicate your desire to join – simply place it in the alms basin or hand it to an usher.
How do I become a member?
When you tell us that you want to become a member, we consider you a member from that point on. If you are already a baptized and/or confirmed member of another Episcopal church we encourage you to ask your former church for a letter of transfer. We’ll be happy to take care of that request for you. If you are joining Church of the Annunciation from another denomination, you may simply state that you wish to be a member and participate fully in the life of this parish. If you are baptized, confirmed, or received by the bishop here you become a member.
What if I’m interested in Baptism for myself or my child?
The Book of Common Prayer designates certain days in the church year as being especially appropriate for the celebration of Holy Baptism. These are: the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord (the first Sunday after the Epiphany), the Easter Vigil (Saturday night before Easter), the Day of Pentecost, and All Saints’ Day or the Sunday after All Saints’. While we hope to reserve Holy Baptism for these special days, exceptions can be made.
Is Confirmation for me?
Confirmation is an important sacramental rite in the church and is a step one can take to make a “mature public affirmation of their faith and commitment to the responsibilities of Baptism and to receive the laying on of hands by the bishop.” (Book of Common Prayer, page 142.) We encourage those who have not been confirmed to participate in the Inquirer’s Retreat in January. Many lifelong Episcopalian’s choose to take the Inquirer’s Class to reaffirm their faith.
What is expected of me after I become a member?
We expect that you will want to worship regularly, join with others on their spiritual journey in the form of small groups or Christian formation classes, participate in the service of others through the pastoral care ministry or outreach opportunities, and return to God a portion of the financial blessings you have received during the annual stewardship campaign in the fall.
Newcomers Class–New Beginnings
We are delighted that you have been worshipping at the Church of the Annunciation. We hope that you feel genuinely welcomed and embraced by the church family. Coming to a new church is sometimes confusing. Despite our best efforts, meeting new people, understanding certain customs and traditions, and finding a place to offer your gifts can be a challenge. We want to help make your transition an easy and comfortable one.
You are invited to a gathering called New Beginnings which is specifically designed for you and others who are new to Annunciation. These sessions are held twice a year and include time to socialize, time to learn about Annunciation and the Episcopal Church, and time to reflect on how you may be involved in ministry and mission here.
